I was first introduced to Tarot cards during the first grade. Whenever school would finish, I’d have to wait for my younger brother to get dismissed, which would be an hour later. As a kid, sitting and waiting patiently is not at all an option so I would go about running around the school, playing hide and seek and what not. One day, my friend told me he wanted to show me something. So he brings me to his Nanny at the parking lot. A few people surrounded her as she laid down very interesting and colorful cards that to me were simply hypnotizing. The spectators would stand in awe, as she would read the cards and tell them of their futures and fortunes.
The whole idea related to Tarot Cards started as far as a thousand years ago. From the Mamelukes of the great Egyptian civilization, the clerics of the old Christian church, to the nomadic gypsies roaming Europe, the whole concept of the Tarot was used by only minutely different ways. Then came the modern day Tarot which we all know and speak of. This was developed by the Hermetic Order of Golden Dawn who were a magic order of the early 19th century. Today, Tarot cards are one of the more popular forms of Psychic reading and in spite of a more secular and naturalist society, still remain to have a strong following.
It all starts when the card reader shuffles the cards, then lays them down in different ways that they call “spreads”. Each card is turned face up one by one, depending on the type of spread. Commonly known spreads are the Celtic cross and the Horse –Shoe. These are the typical positions you will see whenever you receive readings. Each card has different characters such as the Emperor, to symbolize different archetypes in a person’s life. Then, through a particular system, the persons past, the cards being revealed interpret present and future.
Although having an idea of what your future holds would prove to be very useful, it is certainly wrong to rely solely on Tarot cards. I know people who have at some point based their decisions on their readings which only shows that their “destiny” is not fulfilled but only have created one of their own. The mentality that people should carry whenever they receive a reading is that these are merely guides to what may or may not happen. Regardless if a people take tarot readings seriously or not, it is something that will continue to flourish for the times to come. People will always be fascinated may it be the mystical aspect, the artworks, the prediction of their futures, or even simply by it being a hobby. In a world filled with such negativity, Tarot cards will serve as a release from the brutal reality that is upon us. Any individual will find tarot cards interesting, entertaining and spiritually fulfilling. It is an activity that will stay for a very long time.
